This organization is focused on the identification and preservation
of old mills. It sponsors an annual conference and publishes a fine
newsletter. SPOOM also has a useful Website, which features a
bookstore, information on conferences, an events calendar, grant
guidelines, a list of historical associations, membership information,
a message board, mill lists, real estate for sale, resources, sites
to visit, a trading post, and more. This association made a generous
grant to the Stratton Mill Foundation, which helped finance the
construction of a storage/work building adjacent to the Stratton
Flour Mill. This facility has contributed immensely to the
restoration work on Stratton Mill.
This excellent site contains a regional map of Ohio;
a list of counties, with links to individual mills;
an overview of Ohio's old mills (topics include millstones,
windmills, unique characteristics of Ohio's mills,
mills built on canals, steam engines, millponds,
waterwheels and flour-mill operation); information about
mills and remnants that are not accessible or gone;
terminology; a bibliography; an Ohio mill compendium;
and other features.
An excellent, brief history of the mill along with two photographs
taken prior to onset of restoration, which began in 1990.
